Property Tax Alert: Florida

September 2004

An extension of 60 days has been authorized for counties affected by Hurricane Charley. This extends the normal deadlines for property appraisers to mail notices of proposed Florida property taxes.

The directive also allows local governments that have already printed or mailed their notices of proposed property taxes to reschedule millage and budget hearings stated on the notices, or otherwise previously advertised, if they are unable to hold the hearings because of the hurricane. In addition, the directive extends the time in which affected property owners may protest tax assessments by stating that good cause for failure to meet statutory deadlines for filing petitions to local value adjustment boards will include delays due to the hurricane. For good cause to be established, the notice of proposed property taxes must have been directed to an address to which mail delivery was impaired by the hurricane.
