Property Tax Alert: Texas

June 2007

Texas legislation provides that if an assessor mails a property tax bill to a mortgagee of a property, the assessor is not required to mail a copy of the bill to any mortgagor under the mortgage or to the mortgagor's authorized agent. According to legislative reports, prior law could have been interpreted as requiring both a mortgagee and the assessor to send a tax bill to a property owner. The change is applicable only to a tax bill mailed on or after September 1, 2007.
