Property Tax Alert: District of Columbia

September 2007

District of Columbia real property tax bills for the second half of 2007 were recently mailed to District property owners, reflecting both current and any past due liabilities. If a property owner does not receive a bill by August 30, 2007, then the owner must contact the District's Office of Tax and Revenue Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4829. Failure to receive a mailed tax bill does not excuse an owner from paying the property tax owed. If a property owner's mortgage company pays the real property tax bill, then the owner must still ensure that the payment due is made by this year's September 17 due date.

If a tax payment is late, then the property owner is subject to a 10% penalty and interest at the rate of 1.5% for each full or partial month that the payment is late.

Property owners can also pay the real property tax due online by using the Office's free eCheck payment system.
