The District of Columbia's Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) recently mailed more than 170,000 real property tax bills for the first half of 2008 to District property owners. Payment of these tax bills, which reflect both current and past due real property tax liabilities, is due by March 31, 2008.
If a taxpayer does not receive a real property tax bill in the mail, the taxpayer should call the OTR's Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (4829). A failure to receive a tax bill does not justify nonpayment of any taxes owed.
Finally, if a tax payment is late, then the property owner is subject to a 10% penalty and a 1.5% interest charge for each full or partial month that the payment is late. A property with a delinquent tax bill may be sold at the District's annual tax sale.
